Members of the band Alabama have announced a star-studded benefit concert for tornado relief, BAMA RISING, set for June 14 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Arena. The Community Foundation is the philanthropic partner for this effort, which organizers say is designed to raise millions for so many across our state who were hit by the April 2011 tornadoes.
We were already raising dollars for statewide efforts through the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund, which will use 10 Alabama community foundations to deploy the dollars, and for the Emergency Response Fund, which will serve local needs in Greater Birmingham through a local Long-Term Recovery Committee. The BAMA RISING Fund is structured as a type of Advised Fund, using an advisory committee made up of representatives of the artists, promoters and Community Foundation to distribute the support through nonprofit partners in the affected areas.
The Community Foundation will administer gifts and proceeds from the concert itself or related merchandise so that the BAMA RISING Fund can really make a difference in recovery that is sure to last many months. We see this as one more way to help generous people leverage their gifts — in this case, their gifts of talent as well as money.
The BAMA RISING website has more information about ticket sales, which open May 20. Or click the button below if you want to support long-term tornado recovery across Alabama through the BAMA RISING Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.
