Fall 2008 Grants from Community Funds
Grants awarded from Community Fund, based on current priorities, for the fall cycle of 2008 are listed below, with first-time grant applicants noted by asterisk. Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, $6,000 to support public policy efforts of the Constitutional Reform Project to engage the legal community and other constituencies around the issue of a new state constitution. Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform Foundation, $27,000 to help fund the Mock Constitution Convention Project as a way to improve understanding of the constitutional convention process. Alabama Environmental Council, $22,000 to help fund renovations at Central Alabama’s only drop-off recycling center that accepts a comprehensive list of materials, including glass and electronics. *Alabama Family Trust, $7,000 to support the hire of an outreach coordinator for elderly individuals and families who receive Medicaid or SSI and would benefit from a special needs trust account. Alabama Head Injury Foundation, $5,000 for Neurobehavior Clinic offering assistance such as medication management and compliance monitoring, counseling and training for individuals and their families affected by a traumatic brain injury or related condition. Alabama Humanities Foundation, $5,000 toward SUPER Emerging Scholars, a pilot program to help Birmingham and Jefferson County students develop writing and critical thinking skills, research capabilities and technology skills and gain understanding of and interest in attending college. Alabama Kidney Foundation, $8,000 toward a public education and early detection program directed at African-American males and people with a family history of kidney disease. Alabama Public Television, $21,000 toward expansion of the APT/PBS Kids Raising Readers Initiative in the City of Birmingham and to continue pre-kindergarten literacy programs and an in-depth, community-based literacy program and intensive research study. Alabama Rivers Alliance, $12,000 for the Alabama Water Agenda, a proactive policy campaign to achieve water health in terms of water quality and quantity, public health and aquatic habitat, in partnership with the Cahaba River Society and Black Warrior Riverkeeper. Alabama Youth Home, $8,000 toward construction of a walking track for staff and youth served as well as families during supervised visits. Alzheimer's-Central Alabama, $4,000 toward a program to help patients living at home with Alzheimer’s or dementia attend adult day care centers as a break for their caregivers. American Baseball Foundation, $11,000 toward hiring a part-time Development Director to establish a donor network and raise awareness of the organization. Assistance League of Birmingham, $9,000 for Operation School Bell, providing new school clothing, uniforms and personal care products for disadvantaged children in kindergarten through sixth grade in 23 schools in greater Birmingham. Better Basics, $12,000 to help support the four core literacy programs of Better Basics, providing structured reading assistance to students identified by classroom teachers. *Bridges Foundation, $1,000 for a consultant to provide assistance for this organization serving children who are recipients or awaiting organ transplants Cahaba River Society, $34,000 toward programs focusing on watershed and the quality of drinking water through education, land use, watershed planning and improving state and local programs. Childcare Resources, $9,000 to help fund national quality assurance accreditation which will ensure high quality training programs and resources for families/childcare providers, and establish the organization as a leader in the field of early care and education. Children's Dance Foundation, $6,000 for the community partnership and school touring programs, including Math in Motion for eight elementary and middle schools. Cornerstone Schools of Alabama, $5,000 for the Healthy for Life program, expanding the physical education program and a partnership with Samford University's Department of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine to promote the health of students. Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, $35,000 to help set new priorities, goals and strategies in relation to the Cultural Master Plan. Easter Seals Birmingham Area, $20,000 to support the Opportunity Project to provide medical therapy services to children who lack insurance coverage. *Forestdale Community Development Association, $3,000 toward installation of a restroom at Forestdale Community Park, serving participants in outdoor activities including tennis, basketball and family gatherings. Girls Inc of Central Alabama, $14,000 for the Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy (PAP) program, including salaries for a coordinator and Hispanic specialist working with girls ages 12-18 attending schools and summer camps in Jefferson County. Glenwood Mental Health Services, $82,000 toward Campaign for Autism, supporting construction, renovation and expansion of camp and residential housing for children and adults with autism. Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership, $37,000 to toward summer programs designed to help K-fourth grade teachers from Bessemer, Fairfield, Homewood, Hoover, Jefferson County, Mountain Brook, Shelby County and Trussville schools improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. *Greater Birmingham Youth Lacrosse Association, $10,000 to support Inner City Lacrosse Initiative, working with physical education teachers, coaches and administrators in Birmingham city schools and parks. *Green Resource Center of Alabama, $20,000 toward initiatives concerning environmental consciousness and healthy living, including the Enviro-Economic solutions program, Library and eLibrary and Recycling Partnership program. Hand-In-Paw, $7,000 to expand the Pawsitive Living program for at-risk youth referred from Glenwood Mental Health, Lovelady Center, Alabama Clinical Schools, Family Court of Jefferson County and the Salvation Army Youth Services *Heart Gallery of Alabama, $15,000 toward hiring staff to support efforts to help foster children find families and prospective families get the information they need to adopt, including partnerships with churches in Central Alabama. *Heavenly Smile, $1,000 toward stocking the Food Pantry which primarily serves low-income seniors in Shelby County. Highlands United Methodist Church, $3,000 to support Project ID program for homeless individuals and families referred by social service agencies in Jefferson County. Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, $8,000 toward hiring a fundraising assistant for this organization serving immigrant Latino community Holy Family High School, $13,000 to support continuation of a technology upgrade, including new desktop computers in classrooms and other enhancements to facilitate local and distance learning. Hope House, $19,000 toward hiring of a part-time clinical director to ensure quality clinical care at Old Oak Tree, a clinic serving veterans and their families. Housing Fund of Central Alabama, $50,000 toward efforts to increase the availability of affordable housing, including hiring a Project Manager. *I.N.S.P.I.R.E., $5,000 toward staff for the Manifested Sons Mentoring program, serving male youth and their families with mentors, case management, enrichment and life skills. *Oak Grove Memorial Park and Recreation, $10,000 for playground equipment serving children ages 2 to 12 in the Oak Grove area. IMPACT Family Counseling, $6,000 for the Family Strengthening Program helping youth ages 12-18, and their families, who have experienced some criminal activity or truant/delinquent behavior through an eight-week series of classes Jimmie Hale Mission, $27,000 toward construction of an education and administration building that will provide homeless clients with a computer-based learning center, library, counseling offices and classrooms. King's Ranch, $6,000 toward counseling and education services for homeless or abused women and their children at Hannah Home, including GED courses, literacy programs and early childhood education. Laps for CF Foundation, $7,000 for improvements to the Cystic Fibrosis Care Center at Children's Hospital which will assist patients in leading longer, healthier lives. Literacy Council of Central Alabama, $50,000 toward implementing strategies and projects from the regional literacy plan. Liz Moore Low Vision Center, $2,000 to provide assessments, training and devices for individuals with low vision, focusing on helping them work, study and live independently. Magic City Smooth Jazz, $3,000 toward workshops that provide access to artistic excellence through jazz and live jazz performances, especially for students in grades 6-12, college students studying music, music instructors and music enthusiasts. Music Opportunity Program Foundation, $8,000 for the String Academy program, providing string instruction for third through fifth graders in Birmingham and Jefferson County schools and six after-school locations. Outreach Incorporated, $11,000 toward construction of Senior Cottage Communities within existing neighborhoods of western Birmingham, designed to promote independence, interdependence and safety. Prescott House, $8,000 toward cost of forensic interviews for children who have witnessed violent crime or been victims of sexual or physical abuse. Rebirth Community Development Corporation, $4,000 toward hiring a Project Director/Instructor to oversee the GED test preparation program. Red Mountain Theatre Company, $10,000 toward hiring a full-time technical director and full-time costume designer. Redmont School, $4,000 toward cost of developing a strategic plan. RUSH Initiative, $14,000 for the First Teachers@Home and 5 Best Hours program, helping low-income parents in Jefferson and Walker counties prepare 3- and 4-year-olds for success in kindergarten and encourage success for children in elementary and middle school. Ruth and Naomi Senior Outreach, $6,000 to expand the Sounds of Support program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, using music to benefit seniors suffering from depression, dementia, agitation, and grief. Safe Harbor, $5,000 for the Court Referral Program, an alternative community-based program for adolescent first-time offenders and their families in Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair counties. St. Anne's Home, $12,000 to provide additional 90-day treatment for women suffering with chemical dependency. St. Rose Academy, $40,000 toward the Saint Rose Academy capital campaign, involving the renovation of Mackin House and construction of a new academic building. Seasoned Performers, $3,000 to expand the Seasoned Readers program, working with teachers and curriculum specialists to link generations through reading aloud, benefiting senior adults and elementary school students. Shelby County Historical Society, $6,000 to enhance and expand displays of Native American artifacts and collections. Sight Savers of Alabama, $14,000 to support technology upgrades, making possible improvements such as use of software, increased space for workers and client security.. Space One Eleven, $11,000 toward an organization development project, including plans for a future capital campaign, increased visibility, on-line donations and registrations and donor recruitment. Special Equestrians, $3,000 for the Therapeutic Horseback Riding program for Jefferson and Shelby individuals diagnosed with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, traumatic injuries, and many other physical and behavioral disorders. Success by Six, $35,000 to support hiring a coordinator for the Jefferson County Blueprint for School Readiness, an initiative started by the Community Foundation. Unbound Alabama (formerly)National Conference for Community & Justice), $2,000 for the Generational History Project, linking youth with senior adults living in Freedom Manor and Brookdale Place retirement communities for shared activities, learning and dialogue. United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham, $8,000 toward expansion of Camp TNT (Terrific New Technology), technology experiences for pre-school through high school special education students. United Methodist Center for Senior Citizens, $2,000, toward cost of a van to serve older adults in the western area of Birmingham to regain independence and to spend time during the day at the McCoy Adult Day Care center. United Way of Central Alabama, $90,000 over two years, starting in 2010, in matching funds to encourage gifts at the Builders Society level. Urban Ministry, $11,000 toward hiring a full-time director to coordinate and participate in West Birmingham Community Garden and Farm. *The Village, $20,000 toward hiring a Job Development Coordinator to assist residents and expand services to non-residents, including formerly homeless men and men who have been in prison. Vineyard Family Services of Central Alabama, $5,000 toward hiring staff to expand the F.I.T. (Fatherhood Initiative Training) DAD Program to non custodial fathers within the Shelby County Work Release Center. Women's Committee of Spain Rehabilitation Center, $5,000 toward cost of NERCO SMART-Equates System, a diagnostic and treatment system that collects data for use in the Comprehensive Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Program for patients with balance deficits or dysfunctions due to traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and other illnesses Youth Serve, $10,700 for the BEYOND Program, which assists Youth Serve members in making educated decisions about their future during and after high school, including a fee fund to assist with the cost of and preparation for college and entrance exams.
