Civic innovator sees great possibilities right here

Dan Burden of Walkable Communities Inc. has traveled to hundreds of communities in his work as a consultant and as what Time Magazine called one of the most important civic innovators in the world. When he visited Birmingham on April 7, 2009, he praised the human-sized streetscapes that date back to trolley-car days and the wide streets.  In his view, these are the perfect ingredients for positive changes that will make our community a healthier, more bikeable and walkable place to live.

The Health Action Partnership, which includes the Community Foundation, asked Burden to look in particular at major street corridors and intersections in the City of Birmingham, from City Center to East Lake to West End to Cahaba Road. He also spoke at the Health Action Summit, organized by the Jefferson County Health Department, on how all of Jefferson County can develop healthier, more walkable communities.
