FOR CURRENT GRANTEES

When the news gets out about a great grant made by the Community Foundation, everyone wins. You receive positive attention for the important work you are doing, which can spark the interest of other funders. The Community Foundation and its donors are recognized, promoting more investment in community projects and support for the permanent endowment of our Community Funds. And other nonprofits that learn about our grantmaking are encouraged to contact us.

We publicize grants by sending press releases to local media and by featuring grant stories in our own publications, on our website and at our annual meeting.  But we need your help to do that more effectively.

Your staff, board members and donors are the ones who are most familiar with what you have achieved or plan to achieve with a grant from the Community Foundation. Reporters and editors also like to hear directly from a nonprofit organization and the people it benefits. If we work together, we hope to increase our success in getting the word out.

Tips for publicizing your grant
  • Include news of your grant in any publications you produce for internal or external distribution, such as newsletters, brochures, annual reports, lists of supporters, board minutes, etc. Contact our Communications staff for appropriate logos, quotes from key staff and board members and other background material.
  • Contact local media, including weekly suburban newspapers and special interest publications, using either a news release or personal phone call.  Add appropriate quotes and contact information from key people in your organization to make the press release template specific to the current grant.
  • Include the Community Foundation name and logo on signs or plaques that recognize donors at your events or facilities or on publicity material related to your program.
  • Provide a link to the Community Foundation website from your web site. Use the Community Foundation name or logo on your site and set the link there to www.foundationbirmingham.org.
  • Contact our Communications staff for suggestions on appropriate media outlets and contacts, a quick review of your press release or general brainstorming on possibilities for publicity.
  • Forward copies of any clippings of articles or information about coverage in broadcast media. This helps us to gauge our success and build relationships for the future.
  • Submit one or two carefully chosen photographs that show off your grant project – hard copies or high-definition electronic versions.  Be sure that you have permission from the subjects to use these images and we will consider them for use in our newsletters, annual report or website.
  • After the award period is over, continue to report positive news about the impact of this grant to local media and to the Community Foundation
If you have any questions about publicizing your grant or would like to submit publicity samples or photographs, contact Emily Jones Rushing at 205-327-3806.
