Housing Stability Fund: Helping
people stay in their homes

The Community Foundation created the Housing Stability Fund in February of 2009 after in-depth research on the needs of greater Birmingham in tough economic times.  During the rest of 2009, the Community Foundation used $200,000 in grants to keep more than 220 families and 300 children in their homes.

Greater Birmingham Ministries, Hope House and Shelby Emergency Assistance provided rental and mortgage assistance to individuals and families on a case-by-case basis and worked with landlords and utilities to negotiate payments.  As the experts said, it is much more costly to house a family in emergency shelter or transitional housing or to get a family or individual back into housing than to prevent homelessness in first place.
