Leveraging your charitable gifts

Susan WalleySusan Walley and her husband Ryan came to Birmingham for pediatric residency training at UAB and Children’s of Alabama and stayed to raise their family and continue their careers as pediatricians.

Today, Susan leverages her giving through an Advised Fund at the Community Foundation, where she appreciates the diligent research, openness and transparency, plus the chance to find new opportunities to follow her personal passion to improve the lives of children.

“I want to make a difference in the lives of children,” Susan said. “The Community Foundation goes above and beyond to use not only my money wisely, but also my time and passion.”

The mother of three boys, she appreciates the work of Community Foundation staff in connecting her to people and organizations she would not have known about or had the time or resources to research.

“Kathryn Corey took me on a site visit to Preschool Partners and I was able to observe the program and meet the staff and children,” she recalled “It was enlightening to see the tangible results of Community Foundation grants.”

After Susan learned about educational needs for the parents of children in the program, she offered to make a presentation on healthy lifestyle choices. “It was a great experience and we’re planning to make the presentation a yearly event,” she added.
